The TPD Power Quality Pyramid Explained

At TPD, we want to ensure that the best power protection devices are in place to stop or limit the effects of imperfect power. Today's homes have evolved into electrical ecosystems full of microprocessor-controlled devices that are more voltage-sensitive, digitally controlled, and more expensive to replace than ever before. Additionally, the utility grid is supplying more inconsistent power than ever, especially where neighborhoods are growing faster than grid upgrades. This has made the subject of power quality extremely important.

To explain power quality programs, we created the TPD Power Quality Pyramid (link to document). This simplifies power quality into three tiers: foundational, advanced, and power outage protection.

Foundation: TPD Surge Protection

  • TPD Surge Protection is the base of all power quality to protect equipment from damaging surges and transients, encompassing 80% of all power issues.

Advanced Protection: TPD Voltage Regulation

  • Voltage Regulation keeps voltage from sagging and spiking, keeping your electronics safe from degradation over time.

Power Outage Protection: Backup Solutions

  • Backup power solutions like generators, battery storage, or UPS systems are essential for maintaining power and ensuring continued operation during extended outages.

Systems from Lutron lighting and Crestron controls to HVACs and EV chargers require all three layers to maintain uptime and prevent expensive service calls.
